Our international arbitration practice has a particular focus on complex construction, engineering and infrastructure disputes arising out of FIDIC Contracts, EPC and other bespoke construction and engineering contracts.

Chambers acts in international arbitrations arising from major construction, engineering and infrastructure projects worldwide. We accept instructions in high-value disputes involving delay and disruption, variations, extensions of time, termination, and final accounts under the leading arbitral rules (including ICC and the LCIA). Combining deep sector knowledge of construction, engineering and infrastructure contracts with rigorous procedural and evidential strategy, we provide robust and focused representation and advocacy from jurisdictional challenges and interim relief through to final hearings and enforcement.

Charles Edwards, FCInstCES, MSt(Cantab), MSc(Lond), Barrister, leads the international arbitration practice. He is dual-qualified and holds a master’s degree in construction law and arbitration from the Centre of Construction Law at King’s College London and a graduate of the University of Cambridge (Departments of Engineering and Architecture). Charles combines technical understanding with legal precision.

EXPERIENCE

Advised and assisted (as part of a team) with drafting an international arbitration claim on behalf of a contractor in an ICC arbitration against a particular government in relation to an infrastructure project seeking circa $40 million.
Acting in a circa £4 million ICC Arbitration involving payment, construction of a contract and termination of contract.
Acted for an international company regarding Applications in the High Court (QBD) under section 9 of the Arbitration Act 1996 to stay legal proceedings commenced against the company in the High Court. This matter involved the oil and gas industry, international commercial law, the validity of an arbitration agreement, breach of contract and the jurisdiction of the High Court in England and Wales.
Advised an Employer in connection with an Arbitration agreement included in a JCT Building Contract 2016 on a major new build development and the interpretation of the dispute resolution provisions included within the building contract between the parties.
